Character figure catalog

Plastic model kits were the original fuel in the Votoms engine. That’s what got the show made in the first place, the prospect of turning cool 2D mecha designs into cool 3D mecha plamo. But it’s a sign of true popularity when the characters in a show make that same leap. This sounds strange when you look in from the western world, where character figures often form the leading edge of the merch.

The characters in Votoms, particularly Chirico and Fyana, were appealing enough to make that breakthrough in the worlds of plamo, garage kits, and action figures alike. Presented here is a catalog of well over 50 examples, most of which are now collector’s items. Release dates are elusive, so they are mainly organized by scale, smallest to largest.

(Not included here are figures that came with the Takara and Bandai model kits. Look for them in other articles.)

1/24 Chirico and Fyana

Hobby Japan and Wave worked in tandem to make this pair. Chirico was a giveaway in Hobby Japan magazine.

Chirico came with two different heads as shown here. There was an identical figure of Rane from Commando Vorct using the same body.

The Fyana figure was limited to 12,000 and sold in Wave stores.

1/24 Chirico

A simple Chirico figure made to accompany 1/24 Wave garage kits in standing and piloting poses.

1/24 Fyana

Wave made this figure to match the 1/24 Chirico, including a seated pose for her to be carried.

1/24 Chirico

This garage kit by F-Kei was sold with multiple arms and hand props.

1/20 Chirico

A pre-colored model kit released by Our Treasure in 2018.

1/20 Chirico

A 3D-printed resin version of the same figure, also released by Our Treasure.

1/24 & 1/35 Chirico Red Shoulder figure

Double figure set, Our Treasure.

1/20 Fyana

Garage kit figure, sculpted by R.C. Berg and released by Field.

1/18 Chirico

Takara released this Chirico as unit MA-24 in its popular Microman Action Series, which included a helmet, pistol, bazooka, landmine, and optional hands. See more info here.

1/18 Chirico

This upgraded version (MA-38) added more weapons and props to the same figure.

1/18 Chirico

This looks to be a limited edition version of Microman Chirico with no option parts.

Other Microman figures: Chirico in Red Shoulder uniform, Fyana, Vanilla, and Ality Merowlink. The first three were bundled with Takara’s 1/18 DMZ (Dual Model Zwei) AT toys. The Merowlink figure was bundled with a DVD set, and was one of two. (See them both here.)

1/18 Ypsilon

Another Microman figure (MA-35) from Takara, armed with helmet, option hands, and hand weapons.

1/18 Fyana with Jijirium Capsule

One of the odder choices, essentially an unadorned female Microman figure in a tube.

It did have a light-up feature, which would have made for interesting diorama opportunities. See more info here.

1/18 Arron and Gurran

This was an even odder choice, two very obscure and rather creepy characters with very little action potential. Their creepy pet was also included. See more info here.

1/15 Chirico

Resin figure by Volks.

1/14 Chirico

One of the earliest resin garage kits, if not the first, released by Lark.

1/14 Chirico

When Lark evolved into Wave, the figure was repackaged and renamed “3 Type Conversion Kit” since it came with three heads.

All three heads are shown here; two of them captured different anime designs and the third was a helmet.

1/14 Chirico

Another repackaging of the same figure by a company named Seed Off. This may or may not have been a transitional point between Lark and Wave.

1/12 Chirico

Action figure released by Yamato in scale with their 1/12 AT toys. See more info here.

1/12 Fyana

Yamato released two versions of Fyana. The first in Woodo City colors…

1/12 Fyana

…and the second in Space Battle colors.

1/12 Chirico & Fyana

This was a set of fixed-pose figures released by Wave in their “Treasure Figure Collection.” See more info here.

If they look familiar, you’re not mistaken. They are scaled-up versions of the 1/24 figures at the top of this page (both scales shown above left).

1/12 Chirico & Fyana

Wave also released an unassembled, unpainted version of this set in cooperation with hobby shop Be-J as part of an in-store event called “Votoms Fair 02.”

1/12 Chirico

Another action figure, released by Yutaka in 1999.

It took a fair amount of determination to get all the parts on over a very uncooperative “wetsuit” made of orange rubber.

1/12 Chirico

Ohtsuka Kikaku did a much better version in their “Hyper Hero Real Action Doll Collection,” which included a partial fabric costume and similar costume parts.

1/8 Fyana

Garage kit by Adel Habits.

1/8 Chirico

This finely-crafted figure was released by Volks to go with their record-setting 1/8 Scopedog model.

1/8 Fyana

Another release from Volks in their “Orient Hero Series.” (1996)

1/8 Coconna and Vanilla

As Volks expanded their 1/8 product line, these two were added to expansion sets.

The set includes (L to R): Gilgameth soldier, Chirico, Fyana, Niba (from Big Battle), and Ypsilon.

1/24 Philphy Cocoshnik

This character is an original creation by R.C. Berg, made as a spinoff for their 1/24 “Scopedog 21C” garage kit. Released in 2016, the idea was to come up with an appealing character with minimal parts to encourage amateur modelers to take the plunge.

See more photos of this kit here and here.

  1. David says:

That Takara 1/6 Chirico is really weird. No elbow articulation and you have to cut the finger to make a trigger finger, in addition to the other parts you have to trim and/or glue together. The little diecast Armor Magnum is great, though, and you can easily put the costume and accessories on any other 1/6 doll.
