Deform catalog 1

They’ve been branded by many names over the decades: Super Deformed, Robo-chan, Choro-Q, and others. Over time, the blanket term “deform” has settled in as a reference point. It’s a classification for representations of a character or mecha that in some way distorts the original image, usually for cute/comedic effect. Many a dream-team video game has been made feasible by this practice, since it places IP in a unique category that doesn’t compete with “the real thing.” Predictably, “deform” itself evolved into another “real thing.”

Armored Trooper Votoms was among the first anime mecha series to be subjected to the “deform” approach, and the assault has never ceased. Today, deform Armored Troopers are still popping up where you least expect them, like little cackling gremlins.

This multi-page catalog is my attempt to bring them all together just to see what happens. Don’t get any of it on you, it may not wash off.

Takara products

Takara’s “Choro Q” toy line was where it all began in 1983/84. They made a little Scopedog that could go into “downform” and zip around via a friction motor.

This “revival” box set, released in later years, contained all four of Takara’s signature mecha from the early 80s: Scopedog, Galient, Giant Gorg, and Dougram. Together they could not be stopped. Ever.
