The Solution inked pages

The Solution was one of the Ultraverse team books, written by James D. Hudnall and drawn by a variety of pencilers. I was the letterer on the series, and the penciler who impressed me most was John Statema. I hadn’t seen his work before, and I haven’t seen it since, but his page compositions and attention to detail were stunning.

He was also tough to ink, as I found out one day when Editor Hank Kanalz brought me a page from issue 7 that was simply too much for the regular inker Thomas Florimonte to deal with on top of everything else; the page that broke the inker’s back. This was a job for the art department. Our resident inkers Larry Welch and Scott Reed had full plates, so this one came to me. It took an entire day, but I had a wonderful time doing it.

I enjoyed that experience so much that I wanted to try it again. On my own time, I went back to issue 6 and picked two pages with more emphasis on characters. I inked them as non-published versions for my portfolio (giving penciling credit to John, of course).
