Hi Tim, I was wondering if you are able to do a post explaining how you approached storyboarding from script to storyboard?

Be interesting to see how someone who has been doing this for decades does it and how you have updated your style of adapting over the years and tech changes.

That’s a multi-level art course right there. The simplest way I can explain it is that reading a script puts a picture in my head (sometimes a full movie) and then I figure out what other pictures are required to “get to” that picture I first saw. In all cases, the picture I see first is the strongest one, because it comes out of pure, undiluted instinct. And it always survives in the end product.

I understand. Does the scripts usually have like descriptions of the shots they are after or do they usually give you free rein on the shots?

        • TimEldred says:

They occasionally contain camera direction, but writers typically leave those choices to the director and board artists – unless they have a very strong opinion about how a scene should be depicted.
