Mach GoGoGo Publishing
1. Shonen Book magazine
The original manga by Tatsuo Yoshida was published in Shonen Book ahead of the TV series, running from June 1966 to May 1968. (The series made its broadcast debut in April 1967 and ended a year later.) Issues of Shonen Book are understandably rare these days, but not impossible to find. Sample issues show here:
February 1967
June 1967
1967 summer special
1967 and 1968 issues
March 1968 and Mach GoGoGo special
Unknown issue and Mach GoGoGo sticker book
2. Collected manga
The manga seen in Shonen Book has been collected and reprinted many times over in multiple editions. Here’s what I’ve found from both Japan and America:
First paperback collections, Sun Comics
Omnibus editions
2008 editions
2-volume English edition from NOW Comics, 1988
2-volume English edition from Digital Manga Publishing, 2008
3. Other books
You’d think such a classic and world-famous anime title would have at least one art book or series guide, but these things simply do not exist. Instead, we must make do with spotty coverage in books on wider topics. Here the only four I’ve been able to find:
Mecaman Art Works
The World of Mitsuki Nakamura
メカマン・アートワークス 中村光毅の世界
112 pages, color and b&w
Mediaworks, 2001
Paintings and mecha design from Mach GoGoGo, Gundam, Crusher Joe, 60s Tatsunoko productions, and more
Ippei Kuri Works
九里一平作品集
205 pages, color and b&w
Kyuryudo Co., 2012
Compendium of paintings and illustrations spanning Tatsunoko anime from 1965-1984 including Mach GoGoGo, Gatchaman, Casshan, Tekkaman, and many others including original and manga works
Tatsunoko Anniversary
(Tatsunoko Pro 30th Anniversary Collection)
タツノコプロ30周年記念全集
Film book: Color and B&W, 192 pages • Sketch book: Color, 112 pages
Bandai, 1993
Two books in a slipcase: a “Film book” that covers all their anime productions from 1965 to 1992 (index, products, design documents, interviews, and more) and a “Sketch book” of color concept art by the studio’s leading character designers.
Tatsunoko Pro Anime Super Data File
(The Complete History of Tatsunoko Pro Anime)
タツノコプロアニメ大全史
Color and B&W, 160 pages
Tatsumi Mook, Feb 1998
This one is only 30 pages slimmer than the 30th Anniversary film book published five years earlier, but jams in even more information that makes it a joy to flip through. There’s a party on every page, and you’re invited! Mach GoGoGo pages shown below.
Art from other books, Ippei Kuri and Tatsuo Yoshida
Honorable mention:
The Art of Speed Racer
Color, 256 pages
Universe Publishing, 2008
This is the one and only art book I’ve found for the 2008 live-action movie, which I apparently liked much more than the vast majority of those who saw it. (In fact, most people in the anime community agree with me that it’s an amazing film, so I don’t feel like a castaway.) As art books go, however, it’s kind of a mixed bag. Only the first 78 pages consist of art content; conceptual drawings, storyboards, etc. All the rest is a reproduction of the screenplay, which may be interesting to some, but not for me. Either way, happy to have this one on my shelf.
