Judge Dredd Megazine Volume 3 (part 2)
With issue 39, the Megazine changed its cover design and format and gave us all quite a gift; an issue-by-issue reprint of Preacher, originally published in the US by Vertigo (an imprint of DC comics). It was an odd choice in terms of content, since it has nothing in common with Dredd, but its pedigree made it an easy pick since it was written by Garth Ennis and drawn by Steve Dillon, both 2000AD alumni. I, for one, hadn’t picked it up yet, so this was an easy way to dive in. It felt like I was getting it for free. And I loved every page of it. When it ended, I hopped over to the American edition and kept on going.
Rebellion took ownership with the first issue of 2000, but the only outward sign of change was when the cover blurb “Not for sale to children” switched over to “For mature readers only.” The logo and format changed again in issue 64, and Strontium Dog showed up as a black and white reprint of older strips from 2000AD, which brought questionable value to the table. The Megazine reached its tenth anniversary in October 2000 and Volume 3 came to a close the following summer to make way for Volume 4. And so…the beat goes on.
