Animec Vol. 32, September 1 1983
GenPro Hanzai Chronicles
Extra Edition
by Toshio Okada
Continuing from the last issue, here is the Daicon IV opening anime again. However, I am writing this article at the end of July. There is no way to know what the anime, which will be released on August 21, will be about…
Okada: So, today we have gathered together all the staff from the Daicon IV opening anime.
Yamaga: I’m Yamaga, the director. I have an IQ of 40, but my pure desire to be famous is second to none.
Anno: I’m Anno, who did the walking Monster and Super Valkyrie battle in Macross Episode 27. I’m actually a mecha fan, and I’m also a pervert, and I’m from Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture. (Anno cries)
Akai: I’m Akai, the notorious ultra-pervert who directed Patriotic Sentai Dai Nippon. I’m from Yonago, Tottori Prefecture. I draw only girls every day in the opening anime.
Iori: I’m always drawing Ultrahawk 1, missiles, and mountains.
Okada: Let’s hear what you have to say about the Daicon IV opening anime we announced the other day…
Yamaga: That’s impossible! It’s only July 25! It’s only 25% done!
Akai: I have to draw at least two hundred more pictures of girls’ bottoms.
Iori: I have to draw at least sixty more Ultrahawk 1 bodies. Waaah!
Okada: If Animec says it’s the beginning of September, it’s the beginning of September now, you idiots! Yamaga, you’re the director of the OPA after all! You can’t read ahead by a month and say, “Wow, scene 62 was a little underexposed.” You’re from Niigata! That’s why your town is full of Roske and Iscacelli!
Yamaga: (Excitedly and unintentionally speaking in Niigata dialect) You don’t have to put it like that. Okada-san is so mean to you, Niigata!
Akai: That’s right, Okada-san is so harsh.
Iori: I’m just a pervert. I should just draw Ultrahawk.
Okada: Ugh, what a weird accent, you country bumpkin!
(After this, they argue for about two and a half hours about whether Osaka is a country town or not.)
Okada: By the way, Yamaga-kun, be honest. As of July 25, do you expect the anime to be completed by August 20?
Yamaga: There’s almost no chance.
Okada: (screaming) W-what should I do?! (screams)
From the storyboard of the opening anime. A girl fights in the “World of Mobile Suits” without worrying about copyrights.
LEFT: Storyboard and rejected cover page by Kiyozumi. He promised the sky that he would devote his life to the starry cranes. You can imagine how stinky the octopus room is, where you can’t see the floor.
CENTER: The girl flying in formation with Ultrahawk 1. Anno had to draw the Ultrahawk 1 every day for this storyboard. Oh, I hope GenPro’s Hawk 1 sells…
RIGHT: This is a perfect example of the character director, Mr. Akai’s design. He has recently been calling himself “Akai of the four tails.” He made his debut as a manga artist with “Grab the Pieces!!” at a certain hobby Animec, drawing derision from the staff. Hey, Akai. Why don’t you do some work for GenPro?
AT RIGHT: Another rejected storyboard by Anno. Despite being mocked as an “erotic animator” and a “sexual evangelist,” he continues to draw nasty pictures every day! What is “Sae-san” in the text? “Sae-san” refers to Saegusa, who is called ‘Sexual Beast’ by the staff. He is a fellow pervert.
In Macross Episode 27, Anno just joined the Artland mecha team as a part-timer. He was forced to do the monster walk, Super Valkyrie battle, and city breakup. It shows the dark life of the anime team.
The character design of the “girl” was created by Akai. To research bunny girls, he frequented The Royal and other high-end bars in Umeda, Osaka, with a sketchbook in hand. Thanks to that, he was able to create such a lewd concept.
LEFT: Breetai ObaQ, and Char Doraemon. One of the staff has a girl with the nickname “ObaQ,” and for some reason Char is popular among the staff, so they were introduced. Ah, she’s scary.
RIGHT: This is the concept of the sword that the girl rides on, by a new staff member, Seizumi. It plays a very important role in this anime.
The final full anime mob scene lasts just a few seconds. All the characters move at once and the camera moves as well. It’s so perfect…now, how many can you recognize?
Voice: Laughter
Okada: What’s that laughing?
Akai: It’s the Vajra King!
Iori: The Vajra King has appeared!
Yamaga: Okada-san, don’t worry! Vajra, the guardian god of Osaka University of Arts, is here. He’s a legendary figure who can finish any anime in one night!
King Vajra: Ha-ha-ha, boys. Stop fighting. I will finish it in one night. Waaa hahahaha!
Okada: You’re “Shonen Ousha!” This isn’t the world of Soji Yamakawa! Who is this guy?
Akai: He’s the guardian deity of the Department of Visual Planning at Osaka University of Arts. Please, King Vajra, I beg you!
Iori & Yamaga: Please!
Okada: I don’t know what’s going on, but I’ll go with it anyway.
So we’ve added a new staff member, Vajra a.k.a. Kongo Maou, who is a famous man at Osaka University of Arts. Daicon IV OPA is now in the last dash. I wonder if we’ll be able to make it on the day of the event…
For now, please take a look at the settings and the shots we have uploaded so far. It’s really messed up. Whew….

Okada: Yes, this is GenPro, currently bringing you the latest news on our new products. Daicon T-shirt, two forty-five a piece…”
Animec editor “Ma”: You idiot, what is this manuscript? And you sent it to me on a train!
Okada: Oh, sorry, Mr. Editor-in-chief. This took me three hours to write.
Ma: If you’re late again, I’ll cut the series!
Okada: Oh, I’m sorry, I’ll make the next issue really fun. Please forgive me…
To be continued
Anno’s design of Ultrahawk 1. He didn’t think it would be animated in motion, so he gave extremely complicated instructions. Serves you right. In the main story, five of these will perform formation acrobatics!
LEFT: Two illustrations by Mr. Seizumi on the theme of “star cranes and girls.” I wonder if I’m the only one who feels a strange emotion.
RIGHT: What a surprise! [Mecha designer] Kazutaka Miyatake of Studio Nue came to see the OPA studio. He was locked in the octopus room and forced to draw Arcadia. He cried out, “I thought I would never draw Matsumoto mecha again…” But everyone pretended not to hear him with takoyaki in their ears. [Fellow mecha designer] Mr. Matsuzaki was present at the time, but he only laughed.
LEFT: The Daicon star system is viewed from the side and moves 90 degrees with a twist. At any rate, the staff was impressed by the coolness of the computer. It came with a parameter list, but no one knew what it meant. These octopus-headed bastards!! (Ma-san, you like this kind of thing, don’t you?)
RIGHT: In the last scene, the Daicon star system, which rotates with individual orbits, is perfectly aligned with the DDO mark. This movement was created using a PC. This is the process of data production.
